FA20D Subaru Engine

The FA20D engine had an aluminium alloy cylinder head with chaindriven double overhead camshafts. The four valves per cylinder two intake and two exhaust were actuated by roller rocker arms which had builtin needle bearings that reduced the friction that occurred between the camshafts and the roller rocker arms (which actuated the valves).

EZ36D Subaru Engine

The EZ36D engine had a diecast aluminium cylinder block with 92.0 mm bores and a 91.0 mm stroke for a capacity of 3630 cc. For the EZ36D, sintered iron pieces within cylinder block controlled thermal expansion of journal clearances during warmup; according to Subaru, the iron pieces also relieved shocks to the crankshaft journals and reduced overall vibrations.
